5 of the best: Family-friendly wineries
published on:

We're very blessed in the Cape with a huge variety of places to visit and stay. But what if you have children, and what if you want to be in the Winelands? Here are some locations that you can try out.

(I pretended I had kids with me and went to check the following out.)

45 minutes from Cape Town city centre, it may seem like a wee drive out but Paarl is worth the visit. I was amazed at how beautiful the estate is; lush greenery, a lake, a play area for kids which can be viewed from the restaurant, and plenty of space for picnics.

If you're a lover of live music, keep an eye out for their next concerts which they hold outside - bring a blanket and a large group and watch the sunset with some good beats.

Don’t miss their Child Friendly Sunday Buffets from 12:00 until 15:00 every Sunday with a wide array of entertainment for the kids including; pony rides, jumping castles, jungle gyms and so much more.

Within the Devon Valley area lies a number of lovely wineries but Middelvlei takes the kid-friendly cake - While mom and dad relax with a bottle of Middelvlei wine, the kids can have a good time to playing in the oversized sandpit, feeding the farm animals, riding the kick bikes and merely enjoying the vast open space.

Feeling peckish? Don't miss out on the Boerebraai fun which includes all your favorites - chops, boerewors, chicken sosaties, roosterkoek and braaibroodjies.

Van Loveren

Get the kids involved with the "wine" experience by spending a day tasting at Van Loveren in Robertson. An ingenious idea, which has quickly been followed by many others, sees kids been given their own tasting platter (just R25) - obviously it's grape juice and not real wine – which allows them to pick up flavours in the juice and match it with sweets.

Grab a pizza at Christina's Bistro and then walk it off with a guided stroll around their gardens (it's R40 and includes a glass of bubbly.)

Celebrating 333 years of history, Blaauwklippen is one of South Africa's oldest estates yet it continually ensures that it offers new and dynamic experiences to keep guests coming back for more.

There is a Family Market every Sunday from 10am - 3pm. Here you'll find pony and carriage rides, friendly goats and a fun-filled jungle gym. There are picnics available for purchase.

A new charcuterie has opened on site so stock up on your meats and can be part of the Paleo diet right?

In the Overberg, overlooking rolling hills and standing impressively amongst vineyards and olive trees (Looking very European), Gabrielskloof offers winetasting, a super lush restaurant and the perfect spot for relaxing.

The huge centre courtyard makes it easy for kids to play whilst parents feel settled enough not to have to jump up every 5 mins. Food-wise, they do posh grub as well as delicious burgers and an array of platters for picking at.
