The Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show has entered its 17th edition and 977 wines from 201 participating producers were judged. The Middelvlei Momberg 2016 received the trophy for the Best Shiraz-Based Red Blend, one of only 23 trophies awarded. Tinnie Momberg, cellar master and co-owner of Middelvlei Wines, is thrilled to get recognition for this eclectic red blend, bearing the family name. “The Momberg is made to add an extra dimension to our premium range, consisting predominantly of single-varietal wines. Although complex, the Momberg is surprisingly approachable for a 2016”
This Shiraz based blend (42% Shiraz, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon and 24% Pinotage) offers delicate, fresh, red fruit aromas superbly balanced with ripe tannins and backed by subtle wooded spices with a delightful lingering aftertaste.
The Middelvlei Cabernet Sauvignon 2016 was one of only 40 wines awarded a gold medal with a score of 95 out of 100. According to Tinnie the terroir at Middelvlei has always been very suited to Cabernet Sauvignon. “As we see a great future for Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon, Middelvlei has invested in planting 12 hectares of this noble varietal and I cannot wait to start working with the new fruit!”
This velvety smooth and elegant wine has intense tobacco flavors, luxuriously wrapped around silky tannins, with a cassis infused finish. Both wines are available at wine outlets and restaurants nationwide or at the cellar - door and online shop.
